Iceland: Frosty and Snowcat

A day of driving through scenic Iceland. The morning started with breakfast in the apartment and making our own packed lunch, we thought Alex would be proud. We drove out of Reykjavik, up to Borganes, along a very icy road so I was driving. 2.5 hours in, we hadn’t have got to the waterfall which was meant to be only 2 hours of Reykjavik, and we were still over an hour away. So, the weather had changed our plans. Instead, we would drive all day, to get to the hotel in daylight. When the sunrise is at lunchtime, then sets at 3pm, we were against the clock.
The drive was amazing, past mountains covered in snow. We stopped for lunch at a very rare spot, a forest! Admittedly only a small forest, but sufficient enough for Ali to use the facilities. We are turning in Skyraholics, two a day so far. We continued on, through the Snaefelles peninsula and found out hotel in Budir. When you drive down the track, you don’t expect to see such a large hotel, right on the shore. It’s a very quaint, elegant hotel, with views of the mountains and the waves.
We decided that we hadn’t had enough ice driving, so went for a drive before dinner, to the end of the peninsula, where we found a monument of a couple that died of exposure. The road back resembled a scene from Ice Road Truckers.

In the evening, we ate in the restaurant. Oh my gosh, what amazing food. Butter made on the premises, with garlic and parsley. Homemade bread, vegetarian roast pepper dish which was divine and oh the dessert. It was called a glacier, white chocolate moose, chocolate cake chunks, pear sorbet, chocolate sauce, nut brittle. AMAZING.

So, today was a day of driving and looking at the scenery. Total cost of the day was a price of a coca cola at the petrol station. We listened to Christmas tunes in Iceland, my favourite was Frosty the Snowcat.
