How many Sydney highlights can Ali cram into a day? The
answer is a lot, but when you are jetlagged and awake at 5am, setting off at
7:30 seems quite normal. Our first stop was to Wildlife Sydney, tickets bought
for us by Portsmouth. I didn’t know quite what to expect, I hoped it wasn’t too
zoo like, but I was amazingly surprised, it was fantastic, I’d recommend it to
everyone. We listened to the koala talk, the kangaroo talk. We took pictures of
wallaby’s, kookaburra’s, insects, cassowary, butterfly house and saw a
saltwater crocodile from the top, and underwater. I really had no idea they
were that big, they didn’t look that big on Crocodile Dundee! I also learnt
that kangaroo’s breed better than rabbits, and a koala’s first meal is it’s
mothers poo!
Next stop was lunch on Circular Quay, they really do gluten
free well here, and then the Sydney Opera House tour. We were given ear phones
to hear the guide talking which I though was genius., you didn’t have to jostle
to be the first in the queue in order to hear the guide. We walked through the
smaller, larger auditoriums. The guide talked us through the history of the
opera house, building it and what plays are shown. The tour was excellent and
inside the Opera House, I loved the bright purple and red carpet. Some may say
it’s now dated, but I don’t think that style will ever date. Tickets bought for
us by Alison Powell and Mad’s & Erica, thank you! We loved it.
So, onto out next stop, tickets bought by Laura Gilley, Mad’s
and Erica. We boarded the Mijistic boat for our Sydney harbour cruise. Sadly,
we couldn’t hear much over the commentary due to the number of very small
children screaming, but it was lovely to get a different perspective of the
opera house, the bridge, the quarantine island, the very rich houses, and the
various islands. By this point we were hanging, so we wandered back to the
hotel through the botanical garden. Then to get back up to Kings Cross, a
million steps. After walking all day, it’s the last thing you want to see. Back
at the hotel for a quick change.
Back out, this time to see a show at the Sydney Opera House,
bought for us by Aunty and Cous Cous. Originally called Trannie but has somehow
changed it’s name to little girl Trashley? Based on the musical ‘Annie’. By the
commentary, there has been a lot of controversy over the adult only panto and
it’s connections to ‘Annie’, with
petitions etc. I think you needed to be Australian to understand many of the
jokes, but it didn’t matter, it was absolutely hilarious and had us in stitches
for the entire show. Although incredibly jet lagged, it kept my attention
throughout the whole thing, it was fantastic. On our walk home to the tube, we
also got to see Sydney by night.
