Reefton is lovely, although I fear many people skip through
it on their way to Greymouth and don’t stop. However, it feels like you have
dropped into the set of a western due to it’s gold mine heritage. We woke up in
our historical B&B, then Ali guided us on the local walking tour of the
village. At first I was dubious as it took us to some houses, then the new
hospital, but then we visited the school of mines, masonic lodge, court house,
Wilsons hotel, band hall and swimming pool. It was excellent. After morning
tea, it was time to hit the road for our last journey in the Rav 4. We
travelled a total of 3182.9kms of South Island, it was like leaving a friend
behind.
We boarded the Tranz Apline railway, our utmost thanks to
Brigitte for treating us to an amazing trip through the alps. We stood on the
viewing platform, gazing at the mountains, glacial lakes and over high gorge.
We stopped for 10 minutes at Arthurs pass and the sun shone! We haven’t seen it
fully for a while. We travelled through the plains, then arrived in
Christchurch, where our journey started 3 weeks ago.
It was so good to see Matthew and Andy and catch up about
our trip, it kinda all came out, I didn’t shut up until bed. After eating our
so much, it was so nice to have ham rolls and chips while watching tv and
catching up.
