Last night was
lovely. For Ali’s birthday meal, we went to the same restaurant from yesterday
and Ali finally got to have her favourite, Arctic Char. We then went to a small
micro brewery with lots of local beers. We had a very dark ale which was
lovely, sat in a pub with 3 men.
Back to
today, we left Akureyri and headed East to Husavik. It’s rained a lot so there
is slush everywhere and we have discovered that it’s worse to drive in slush
than new snow. We decided to go to Husavik, where we have previously been whale
watching. Our intention was to go to the exploration museum and Husavik Church.
Alas, both were closed. So back in the car to Godofoss waterfall. When deciding
the religion of Iceland, when the leader chose Christianity, he threw all of
the norse god statues into the falls, hence the name. It’s a lovely spot but
when we arrived it was rather snowy so only a quick stop and a walk over the
bridge.
We drove over
glacial rivers, past frozen lakes and where a new film is being recorded called
Fast Eight. It is being filmed on Lake Myvatn and so far, two diggers have
fallen in the lake. We saw hundreds of cars, vehicles and their entourage. Our
guesthouse is a portacabin looking to the large tephra crater. Ali drives day
to day, I drive anywhere where we are likely to slide or skid. The road to the
portacabin is a treat, I was going sideways!
On such a
grey day, there is nothing for it. Time for a soak! We ventured to Myvatn
Nature Baths, where we soaked for over 2 hours. Outside it was a 1 degree,
inside the water it was toasty. We people watched, we watched the sun set
through the steam rising from the pool and we floated around. Snow on the
ground next to us.
Time for the
birthday Moet. Back at the portacabin, us classy birds had a picnic in our room
and as the fridge didn’t chill the Moet, we stuck it in the snow outside.
Perfect temperature.
