Iceland - Horse World and Hotel Ranga
The benefit of having a tiny person with us, is that we wake up at 5am most days. This might be the only time I say that sentence. However, Iceland is now super busy compared to our first visit in 2010. So, we decided to go back to the waterfall where we had our wedding pictures taken, and take some with Reyka for her special day - her first birthday.
It definitely wasn’t as cold as the wedding where I was turning blue in the cold. We took lots of pictures. Reyka was fascinated by the cascading water. It’s changed so much. There is now a parking fee, the car park was full of camper vans with people sleeping inside, and the grass is roped off.
Back to Hotel Rangá for the best breakfast in the world. The selection is Devine. Including champagne for breakfast for a Buck’s Fizz. Reyka opened her card and one gift that we brought (from Nana and Grampa). We then followed a new tradition of this holiday and had a long morning nap.
We had lunch at the hotel and the chef brought out Reyka’s special Skyr cake, which was a replica of the cake we had at the wedding. A ‘1’ candle was in the top which we blew out. Reyka looked confused by it.
Reyka’s gift from Nanny and Grandad was a trip to the local horse farm to learn about Icelandic Horses and to sit on one and go around the arena. It was phenomenal. Our guide was so lovely and knew so much about them. They are much shorter than I thought, with thick hair and so laid back. Reyka then got to ride Solveig but alas it was a little too high and she cried, so instead we walked Solveig around the arena. I learnt so much. For example, Icelandic Horses can only have Icelandic names, they have 5 gaits and are horses not pony’s. The tour ended with a coffee and hot chocolate. Amazing tour and would love to revisit.
Back at hotel Rangá for a long dip in the hot tub, then a long jacuzzi in the room, dinner and skyr cake again. The food a Hotel Rangá is by far the best meals I’ve ever had in my life.
The evening was spent listening to my audio book, drinking hot chocolate, on our balcony overlooking the fields and the river. Absolute perfection.
